This pair of trousers is a labour of love, hand block printed by local artisans in small batches at their own pace in a remote village in India. This type of hand block print takes time and is an extremely complex process. Using hand carved wooden blocks, motifs are carefully printed with a resist of a mud paste and several mordants on to the fabric. The fabric then dried under the sun and dyed in an indigo vat. Ajrak hand block printing requires patience, precision and extensive practise.
The fabric takes 45 to 60 days to be handwoven on a traditional handloom, while the block printing takes 25 to 45 days. This pair of trousers travels a total of 2000 miles from the village to our eco-friendly design headquarters in Mumbai. This truly is slow fashion.
